Knock knees, a condition where the inner knees touch while the ankles remain apart, can be more than just a cosmetic concern. It can cause pain, limit activity, and even wear down joint cartilage over time. Bowlegs, unlike their knock-knee counterpart, present with the opposite misalignment. This is a condition characterized by an outward curvature of the legs, which may present more than just a visual concern.
Fortunately, for those seeking relief and improved mobility, Monadnock Orthopaedic Associates offers a life-changing solution with both knock-knee and bowleg correction surgery offers a life-changing solution with both knock-knee and bowleg correction surgery.
Understanding Knock Knees:
Knock knees, a condition where the knees angle inward and touch each other when the legs are straightened, can pose challenges for individuals of all ages. At MCH, we recognize the impact this condition can have on mobility, self-esteem, and overall well-being. Our orthopedic team is dedicated to addressing knock knees through advanced surgical interventions, fostering a path to renewed confidence and comfort.
Is Surgery Right for You?
Not everyone with knock knees needs surgery. In some cases, physical therapy or bracing may be sufficient. However, if your knees are severely misaligned, causing pain, limiting your activities, or accelerating joint wear, surgery might be the best option.
Choosing knock knee correction surgery is a significant decision, and at MCH, we believe in collaboration. Our orthopedic specialists work closely with patients, understanding their unique needs and concerns. We prioritize open communication, providing detailed information about the surgical process, expected outcomes, and addressing any questions to ensure that patients and their families feel confident in their decision.
Understanding the Options:
Knock knee correction surgery at MCH involves advanced techniques tailored to each patient's specific condition. Our skilled orthopedic surgeon Dr. Vache Hambardzumyan will employ a range of surgical interventions, including realignment procedures, to correct the alignment of the knees. The goal is to provide lasting improvements in both form and function, allowing individuals to walk, run, and move with newfound confidence.
At Monadnock Orthopaedic Associates, our experienced pediatric and adult orthopedic surgeons offer two main approaches to knock-knee correction surgery:
Distal Femoral Osteotomy (DFO): This minimally invasive procedure involves making a small, controlled cut in the lower part of the thigh bone (femur) and realigning it. Plates and screws are used to stabilize the bone in its new position.
High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO): This surgery targets the upper shin bone (tibia) and involves similar steps to DFO. It may be preferred if the misalignment is located primarily in the lower leg.
What to Expect:
Knock-knee correction surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure or with a short hospital stay.
The Joy of Reclaiming Mobility:
Patients who undergo successful knock-knee correction surgery often experience:
Reduced pain and discomfort
Improved joint alignment and stability
Enhanced mobility and ability to participate in activities
Increased confidence and self-esteem
Recovery and Rehabilitation:
The journey doesn't end in the operating room; it extends to a comprehensive recovery and rehabilitation phase. Recovery time varies depending on the individual and the severity of the surgery. Physical therapy plays a crucial role in regaining strength and flexibility.
Our orthopedic team, in collaboration with rehabilitation specialists, guides patients through a tailored recovery plan. This holistic approach ensures that individuals regain strength, flexibility, and independence, reclaiming their lives with a straighter and more aligned gait.
Why Choose Monadnock Orthopaedic Associates?
At Monadnock Orthopaedic Associates, we understand the concerns and anxieties that come with facing any surgery. We are committed to providing:
Compassionate and personalized care: Our dedicated team of orthopedic surgeons and nurses work closely with you to create a treatment plan that meets your individual needs and goals.
Advanced surgical expertise: We utilize minimally invasive techniques, leading to faster recovery times and minimal scarring.
Comprehensive support: From pre-operative education to post-operative rehabilitation, we are here to guide you every step of the way.
Taking the First Step:
If you or a loved one is considering knock knee correction surgery, Monadnock Orthopaedic Associates is here to guide you. We encourage you to schedule a consultation. Our experienced orthopedic surgeons will listen to your concerns, assess your condition, and discuss all treatment options available. Don't let knock knees hold you back any longer. [post_content] => Dr. Shawn P. Harrington, MD, FAAPMR wasn't always destined for the sterile halls of a hospital. His early days were spent on Long Island diving into the mysteries of marine biology, dreaming of a life exploring coral reefs and uncharted depths. Little did he know, a twist of fate, a chance encounter, and a passion for helping others would chart a different course, leading him to become an expert board-certified Musculoskeletal Physician for patients in the Monadnock Region.
His journey began in Boston. Drawn by the allure of service, he embarked on a pre-med path, only to find himself captivated by the intricate workings of the human body. This fascination led him to the prestigious halls of the University of Florida, where he started down the path towards becoming a doctor.
What truly drew him to this niche within the world of physiatry? Not just the bones and muscles, but the spark in the eyes of his patients; the desire to enhance mobility, regain independence, and reclaim the vibrant lives interrupted by injury or illness. For Dr. Harrington, it's not just about mending bodies, it's about reigniting hope, one triumphant step at a time.
But beyond the clinic walls, Dr. Harrington is a man of unexpected depths. This seemingly calm and collected physician harbors a secret yearning for adventure. While his scientific mind craves precision and analysis, he values the raw, untamed beauty of the unknown. Picture him not in a white coat, but in jungle boots and headlamp illuminating the way as he photographs venomous vipers in the Amazonian night, or navigating remote rivers, adrenaline pumping as he captures the silent grace of a caiman gliding through the darkness.
This adventurous spirit isn't just a hobby; it's a reflection of his belief in stepping outside comfort zones, both in life and in his medical practice. He collaborates with his colleagues, pushing boundaries and seeking innovative solutions to help his patients reach their full potential. He mentors, he teaches, and he constantly strives to learn and grow, never settling for anything less than the best he can offer.
So, the next time you see Dr. Harrington in the clinic, remember: under the calm exterior lies a soul etched by both science and adventure, a heart fueled by a deep desire to make a difference, one patient, one step, one unexpected journey at a time.

As we step into the vibrant season of spring and enter our second century of service to our community, I am thrilled to share some exciting developments at MCH that reaffirm our commitment to our mission to improve the health and well-being of our community. As you will see in this newsletter, we are excited to announce that we have opened our own Gastroenterology services practice at MCH. We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Michael J. Gilbert to our new practice, Monadnock Gastroenterology Associates. Dr. Gilbert has been a member of our Medical Staff for 10 years in his affiliations with Concord GI, New Hampshire GI, and Catholic Medical Center, so he will be a familiar face to many of you. We’ve also welcomed new providers in other departments, further strengthening our team’s capacity to deliver comprehensive care.
Our Mobile Integrated Healthcare program has garnered national attention, being featured on the television series “World’s Greatest,” showcasing our creative approach to assuring accessible health care. Additionally, we eagerly anticipate the opening of our Rehabilitation turf area in May, an innovative outdoor space aimed at supporting your recovery journey and helping you get back to the activities that are important to you.
We often get compliments on the cleanliness and appearance of our campus and facilities. Our most recent effort is the renovation of our Window Shop. The Window Shop is staffed entirely by MCH volunteers and is a fun, welcoming and comfortable space for our patients, community and employees to visit and shop.
I am very proud of every member of our staff at MCH. Health care is all about people, and I could not ask for a more compassionate and dedicated team. I am inspired every day by their commitment to caring for every patient who comes through our doors.
As the spring bulbs start to pop up and the world reawakens, we are reminded of the beauty of renewal and growth. Thank you for your support and advocacy throughout the seasons. I wish you all a Happy Spring!

Let's delve into the world of wrist fracture surgery, a topic that many of us might not think about until we or a loved one faces this challenge. Wrist fractures are more common than you might imagine, often occurring due to accidents, sports injuries, or even simple falls.
Understanding the Wrist Fracture:
Wrist fractures can be painful and debilitating, but the good news is that modern medical advancements have made the surgical procedure for treating them safer and more effective than ever before. Whether you've personally experienced a wrist fracture or are just interested in learning more, let's break it down step by step.
When Surgery is Necessary:
First and foremost, not every wrist fracture requires surgery. Many can be effectively treated with casting or splinting, especially when the bones are well-aligned. However, if the fracture is severe, if the bones are misaligned, or if the wrist joint is damaged, surgery may be the best course of action. Orthopedic surgeons carefully assess the individual case to determine the most appropriate treatment.
The Surgical Process:
Wrist fracture surgery is typically performed under anesthesia, ensuring the patient's comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision to access the fracture site, where they will then reposition and stabilize the broken bones using specialized equipment such as screws, plates, or pins. This process aims to restore proper wrist alignment and stability.
Recovery and Rehabilitation:
Post-surgery, the road to recovery is crucial. Patients are often guided through a rehabilitation program like the ones offered at MCH, that may include physical therapy to regain wrist strength and mobility. This collaborative approach between patients, healthcare providers, and therapists is fundamental to achieving the best results during the healing journey.
Community Support:
Having a supportive network is essential during recovery. Friends, family, and local healthcare facilities like Monadnock Community Hospital play a significant role in ensuring a patient's successful recuperation.
The Importance of Early Intervention:
Recognizing the signs of a wrist fracture and seeking medical attention promptly is vital. The sooner a fracture is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of a successful recovery.
Wrist fracture surgery is a process that, while potentially daunting, can significantly improve a patient's quality of life. The collaboration between skilled healthcare professionals and a supportive community, such as the one found in Peterborough and at Monadnock Community Hospital, can make all the difference.
Remember, should you or a loved one ever face a wrist fracture, trust in the medical expertise available and the caring community that surrounds you. Recovery is possible, and you're never alone in the journey towards healing.
Stay well, and let's continue to learn, support, and grow together as a community.

[post_content] => Dear MCH Patients,
Due to a cyberattack involving Change Healthcare, patients may experience delays receiving laboratory results. Upon being alerted of the incident with Change Healthcare last Wednesday, February 21st, MCH began working with vendors to make sure the hospital was disconnected from all Change Healthcare products to ensure the safety and security of patient health information.
Change Healthcare is a health care technology company that is part of Optum and owned by UnitedHealth Group. Change/Optum touches almost every hospital in the United States in one way or another – including ours. Due to Change/Optum’s significant scale, nationwide scope, and the concentration of mission critical services they provide or support including but not limited to: pharmacy, health care technologies, clinical authorizations, revenue cycle and more, this cyberattack has the potential to create significant disruptions in the delivery of and access to health care.
The delay we are experiencing is due to a global interruption of service that is impacting our reference lab at Catholic Medical Center (CMC). A reference lab is a laboratory that receives lab specimens from another laboratory and performs tests on such specimen. MCH partners with CMC on a daily basis in the processing of specialized lab orders that aren’t typically done at MCH. While MCH is still utilizing CMC for lab testing at this time, to protect patient information, all processing is being done manually rather than electronically. Due to this process change, patients may not be able to view lab results on the patient portal, if their results are coming from CMC. However, all lab results that are able to be tested at MCH and historical results may still be viewed.
Please be assured that all lab results, whether coming from our reference lab or from MCH’s lab are being reviewed by the ordering clinician in a timely manner and all critical orders will continue to take precedence.
As this is a national incident, we are receiving regular updates from the American Hospital Association (AHA), which has been in contact with the FBI, Department of Health and Human Services, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and UnitedHealth Group regarding this incident.
We continue to monitor closely all updates from Change Healthcare/Optum on the situation and are also testing the security, redundancy and resiliency of our network and data backups to ensure they remain offline and not at risk.
We understand that this situation may cause concern, and we want to emphasize that the security of your personal information remains our top priority. Our team is working diligently to address the challenges presented by this situation.
We are grateful for your patience and understanding as we navigate this situation. Thank you for your continued trust in Monadnock Community Hospital.

Dr. Vache Hambardzumyan, MD, PhD, FEBS
